Re: Peter Bonetti dead
A few more memories of the 5-5 draw.

As we had lost the previous season at Chelsea 6-2, their fans were quite surprised to be losing 2-0. Once Chelsea led 3-2 they were singing, "We want six".

The scoring went (I think) 0-1, 0-2, 1-2, (HT), 2-2, 3-2, 3-3, 3-4, 3-5, 4-5, 5-5.

Bonetti saved Johnny Byrne's penalty but Budgie got to the rebound and scored our third.
Our fifth goal was a long range shot from John Sissons which Bonetti held above his head before dropping it behind him into goal. I have always thought (without any evidence) that he did this as a result of cricking his neck by the earlier wonder save. When this one went in, my dad pointed out, "5-3 and Geoff hasn't got his yet". Unfortunately, Geoff didn't get his and we spent the last ten minutes penned in our half.

In all the years since, I have never seen anything quite like Chelsea's fourth. The ref gave them a (doubtless dodgy) penalty and Tambling was waiting to take it while Jim Standen was kicking the bottom of his studs against a post in the usual fashion to knock off the mud. The ref got tired of waiting and told Tambling to take it. The ball went inside one post while Standen was still standing at the other.

We conceded the scrappy equaliser with virtually the last kick of the game. Although this game has lived in my memory ever since, I wasn't too pleased at the time.

Arlene - Spot on I can remember that save - my old man an I were celebrating a goal that did not happen - Bonetti some how driving upwards and backwards - just fantastic. Can picture it now 5-5 great match and a great moment . Seen plenty of football over the years never seen anything like that save though. RIP Peter Bonetti

Re: Peter Bonetti dead
Goalkeepers didnt wear gloves back then, he started to wear a thin green pair which as a kid we all wanted to have a pair over the park.
He did admit the world cup stick did get to him and on retiring went to live in Scotland to be a postman.

The cat made the most sensational save I have ever seen in the 5 - 5 draw at Stamford Bridge. A long cross came to Martin Peters who brilliantly nodded over Bonneti who was moving toward Peters as the ball was dropping into the goal Bonnetti jumped upwards and backwards horizontally and CAUGHT the ball, holding on to it before it could go in and landing on his back. There was a picture in a paper next day of him in mid air stretching backwards, horizontal about 5 - 6 feet off the ground

e spent about five minutes being treated and when he got up was given a rapturous ovation, by the crowd including us West Ham fans. Unfortunately it was not televised.

RIP Peter Bonneti

Re: Peter Bonetti dead

I remember being at Upton Park the season after the 1970 World Cup playing Chelsea. In the North Bank a section behind Bonettis goal we’re chanting ‘ Bonetti lost the World Cup’ I remember he looked back over his shoulder and looked genuinely upset by the stick he was getting! Poor sod! RIP The Cat 🐱

I remember him making an unbelievable save from a Martin Peters volley in the FACup 4th round in 1965 when they knocked us out 1-0. Often seemed to play out of his skin against us. RIP Cat.

Went to school with his son I think!

Very good goalie I remember, always felt a bit sorry for him that he got a lot of the blame for 1970 WCQF.
